Cappadocia has a terrain unlike any other on Earth, consisting of strange and wondrous rock formations, and hills soft enough to carve out elaborate cave systems. Over the centuries, this region in central Turkey became honeycombed with homes and holy places tunneled into the topography. Göreme boasts many of these sandstone cave dwellings—some of which are now popular hotels. The town is also near surreal clusters of fairy chimneys, as well as the Göreme Open Air Museum and its 11th-century underground churches. The entire town is so extraordinary it was deemed a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
